J.B. Laliberté or Laliberté, was a leading fur merchant and furrier that specialized in furs, fur coats and other items. Located on the famous Rue Saint-Joseph, Quebec City. Jean-Baptiste Laliberté began as an apprentice to a furrier at age 13 died. He was known to have traveled across the oceans to Europe over 60 times. In 1926 he died and the store was taken over by his son John. In 1943 it was sold to a group of shareholders that added furniture and completed its change into a full department store. This was unsuccessful and the store almost went bankrupt until it gained a new owner, Francois Morisset who was successful there for 20 years. In 1972, his son Jacques took it over. In 1995 operations were greatly reduced. In 2017 to commemorate the 150th anniversary, Jean-Marie Lebel, published a book about its history “Laliberte se raconte”.
