Merged with Hale Bros Department Stores Inc / Hale Bros in 1950 and became Broadway-Hale Stores Inc with Edward Carter, already President of The Broadway becoming President of the new venture. Also included in the deal was Weinstock's newly acquired by Hale's. Aggressively expanded to San Diego by 1961. Acquired Sunset House Mail order catalog in 1968. Acquired Emporium-Capwell in 1970 including, Capwell's in Oakland and The Emporium in San Francisco, keeping their names on the stores. 1969 – Broadway-Hale acquired a 3-unit specialty store called Neiman Marcus in Dallas, Texas and Walden Book Co / Waldenbooks. By 1974 Wall Street began to call CHH “Big Ego Inc”. 1972 – Acquired Bergdorf Goodman of New York and Holt Renfrew of Montreal, Canada. 1978 – Acquired John Wanamaker's and Thalhimer's. 1979 – Contempo Casuals
CHH Carter Hawley Hale Stores, Inc. fell into Chapter 11 in 1991 after selling off many companies starting in 1985 to include Waldenbooks to Kmart, Holt Renfrew to the Weston Family, Wanamaker's to Woodward & Lothrop, The Neiman-Marcus Group (Neiman-Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Contempo Casuals) to General Cinema/Harcourt General and Thalhimer's to May Department Stores. 1992 CHH renamed to Broadway Stores Inc and was sold off to Mervyn's, Dillard's and ZCMI. 1995 – All Remaining stores including the Broadway were acquired by Federated Department Stores and renamed to Macy's West
